Upon application of Adv. Sevgi Ergun Ogbonna, graduated from Yeditepe University Faculty of Law in 2004, and as a result of Bar of Nevada State, it is decided that education in Yeditepe Faculty of Law is equivalent to American Bar Association (ABA) certified Faculties of Law. The graduates of Yeditepe University Faculty of Law can pass bar examinations in many states including New York and California, after enrolling to any faculty of law in USA those certified by American Bar Association and completing 24 credits successfully to take Master Degree.
Bar of Nevada State evaluated the situation of Yeditepe graduates who joined the "online" lectures over Internet and took Master degree without enrolling a faculty of law certified by ABA. After a detailed review for Yeditepe University Faculty of Law, it is found that the education is highly qualified, lectures are given mostly in English by foreign legal experts, there is an equipped library and equivalency to faculties certified by ABA is specified.
Adv. Sevgi Ergun Ogbonna, graduated from Yeditepe University Faculty of Law in 2004, registered Istanbul Bar in 2005 and worked as advocate until 2010. She decided to move to Nevada in 2011 and completed master program of semi-remote education of St. Louis Washington University. According to the related American regulation, to allow foreigners to work as advocate in USA, they must completed either a full time master program or they must take license degree from a faculty which is equivalent to any American Faculty of Law certified by ABA to be exempt from this regulation. Due to the regulation “Supreme Court Rule 51.5(1)(C)(2”), Adv. Ergun-Ogbonna, who wants to be advocate in USA and completed a semi-remote program, applied for evaluation of equivalency of her license program in Yeditepe University Faculty of Law to those certified by ABA.
Evaluation result of Bar of Nevada State Review Committee is as follows:
Bar of Nevada State Review Committee stated that the applicant may be exempt from this regulation in case of proving Yeditepe education is equivalent to Faculty of Law certified by American Bar Association. In the evaluation, the situation is assessed in terms of 7 ABA criteria (the quality of faculty of law, curriculum, academic staff, enrollment standards, resources and research methods, physical environment and accreditation already existing, previous accreditation history and previous application) and it is decided that Yeditepe University Faculty of Law is equivalent to Faculties of Law certified by ABA.
This decision is not only the approval of education quality of Yeditepe University Faculty of Law has been approved but also the graduates of Yeditepe have also gained the opportunity of following on line graduate programmes and attend the exams of bar at the same time.
