The world's most distinguished neurosurgeons gathered in Istanbul, chaired by Prof. Dr. Uğur Türe, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Yeditepe University. Honorary Guest Prof. Dr. Ossama Al-Mefty from Harvard University highlighted that Turkish neurosurgery is currently at a very high standing globally. Prof. Dr. Türe mentioned that Türkiye ranks fifth worldwide in neurosurgery achievements.
The meeting, set to shape the future of global neurosurgery, was organized in Istanbul by the Turkish Neurosurgical Society and Yeditepe University under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Uğur Türe. The scientific program attracted hundreds of scientists, including the President of the International Rhoton Society, Prof. Dr. Toshio Matsushima, Japanese neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Shigeaki Kobayashi, and Honorary Guest Prof. Dr. Ossama Al-Mefty from Harvard University, to Istanbul.
Innovations in Neurosurgery Discussed
Prof. Dr. Uğur Türe introduced a groundbreaking surgical position, discussing for the first time globally the advantages of operating on patients in a 'semi-sitting position' for surgeries at the back of the brain and neck area. Experienced surgeons like himself aim to train younger colleagues on the benefits of this position, which had been less favored due to the risk of air embolism in the venous system. However, technological advancements have overcome this issue, providing clear visibility of the brain without blood or fluid obstruction, no brain swelling, and the ability to use both hands during surgery. Prof. Dr. Türe prefers this position for surgeries on the posterior part of the brain and the neck area.
Tips for Brain Health
Prof. Dr. Uğur Türe outlined essential tips for maintaining brain health: Avoiding smoking is crucial as it is detrimental to the brain. Depression negatively affects brain health, and a balanced diet is vital. The Mediterranean diet is highly recommended for brain health. High cholesterol and high blood pressure are enemies of the brain, as is obesity.
