Awareness for “Zero Hunger"
Yeditepe University Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts supported "World Food Day", which is organized every year on October 16th by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with a conference and the distribution of traditional "Red Lentil Soup".
With the main theme of "Zero Hunger ", FAO aims to raise awareness on the same day in more than 150 countries every year. This year, it focuses on "Food safety, sustainable agriculture and its effects on migration". In this context, Yeditepe University also became part part of this year's organization with Head of Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sibel Özilgen's application.
We Will Be 9 Billion in 2050
Beginning by making a presentation on the activities of FAO in this field, Assoc. Dr. Sibel Özilgen emphasized that all people have the natural right to access cheap, accessible and nutritious foods. Stating that according to the predictions of FAO there will be more than 9 billion people living in the world in 2050, Assoc. Prof Dr. Özilgen said it would increase the need for food by 60 percent.
At the conference it was noted that due to the damage we have caused to the environment, the existing agricultural areas are seriously damaged and we need to take agricultural and environmental measures to increase production.
After the presentation, the students of the Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department handed out the traditional "Red Lentil Soup" to participants.
