Yeditepe University will take part with 8 projects in the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) between 19 October - 1 November
Under the curatorship of Jan Boelen, the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, with Yeditepe University being the theme sponsor, is held between 22 September - 4 November with the theme “A School of Schools”.
The biennial will take place at Akbank Art, Yapı Kredi Culture Arts, Pera Museum, Arter, SALT Galata and Studio-X Istanbul in the Beyoğlu region. projects from over 100 participants from 6 continents will include categories like design, architecture, biology, sociology, gastronomy, pedagogy, ecology, technology and economy. The Biennial will also host 8 projects by Yeditepe University between 19 October and 1 November.
Exhibitions
As a guest school, the university will transform one of its 4th İstanbul Design Biennial classroom / classrooms into a studio with workshops and panels organized by different departments of the university between October 25th and November 1st at Akbank Sanat.
Yeditepe University Faculty of Fine Arts Assist. Prof. Dr. Özlem Mutaf Büyükarman and Assist. Prof. Dr. Demet Karapınar's project “The Perfect Time “and Visual Communication and Design Department instructor Ergül Özkutan’s project “100 Frame Intervals” will be exhibited in Akbank Sanat’s classrooms between 25 October – 1 November.
The Perfect Time
The “The Perfect Time” installation is based on the principle that the most efficient time for learning, concentration, and creativity over the day is different for everybody. The installation questions the time-bounded rigid social norms, built-in definitions imposed by the system, such as working hours, study hours, holidays and working days. Those who visit The Perfect Time will experience a different experience with the cube-shaped digital clocks awaiting them, and will find the perfect time for themselves.
100 Frame Intervals
The 100 Frame Intervals project, prepared by Visual Communication Design Department instructor Ergül Özkutan, focuses on the question “How can we use new sources of information to represent the 21st century world?” by creating a “map of life” through 100 frames of images captured by a camera.
Istanbul is being Re-mapped for Children
In this project, Istanbul will be mapped according to the dimensions of the children and the dimensions of their wishes. The project is aimed to understand the children who cannot move freely due to various security reasons in shopping malls, schools and houses. The project will start with a workshop for children at Yeditepe University on September 29-30.
The workshop will be held with the participation of 14 children aged between 6 and 12 years from 8 ISTEK schools in Istanbul. At the Workshop, data such as photography, digital imaging, mental map drawings, various notes, sketches will be collected and merged on the map. In addition, children will be asked to describe their own symbolic spaces within the limited area. Thus, a mapping will be carried out on a child scale, with child perception and child experience.

Prof. Dr. Aslı Akyıldız Hatırnaz and Assist. Prof. Dr. Gözde Çelik, Industrial Products Design Department instructor Assist. Prof. Dr.Ayşem G. Başar and instructor Ergin Yetkin, will be exhibited in the classroom of Akbank Sanat on 26 October, within the scope of the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial.
All Around
On October 27th, in the classroom of Akbank Sanat, Billur Bolel, who graduated from Yeditepe University Visual Communication Design Department last year, will take us to Iceland to follow the results of global warming. Mapping the effects of melting glaciers and rising water levels in Iceland, Bolel will provide visitors with a 360-degree camera view of Iceland, with virtual reality glasses.
Seeking 7Tepe
The project is based on the story of Istanbul, which was built on the 7 hills of the city walls of the historical peninsula. It is looking for different new 7 peaks with the changes from the past to today, with the idea that Istanbul's 7 peaks are not up to date anymore.
In this context, a workshop will be held at Yeditepe University between 28 September and 2 October. In the workshop, 49 students from the faculties of architecture, fine arts and communication from universities across Istanbul will be divided into 7 groups and will be able to determine their own seven hills by using methods such as photography and video recording.

Design Talks Marathon
A ’Design Talks Marathon” will be held at the Pera Museum Conference Hall with the participation of the departments of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Communication and the Faculty of Architecture, on October 19 between 10.00-22.00. In the marathon, current design issues related to design, art and culture like space, city, population, social and individuality relationship, living spaces and lifestyles, new visual languages, new measurements, new maps will be discussed.
Bosphorus SMLXL
The workshop titled "Bosphorus SMLXL", which carries the signature of Architecture department instructor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Funda Yildirim, Ece Ceylan Baba, Assist. Prof. Dr. Moira Valeri, and Computer Engineering department Assist. Prof. Dr. Burçin Basyazıcı will open to visitors on October 31st. The workshop focuses on the Bosphorus Strait on various scales and discusses the Bosphorus as a lively and living space.
Flashmob
The Students of the Bosphorus SMLXL Workshop Group will also perform a flashmob activity within the scope of the biennial. Students will be divided into groups according to the working venues they have set together with the workshop players, and each group will exhibit their work as a flashmob performance at a specific venue in the city.
