Yeditepe University Rector Prof. Dr. Canan Aykut Bingöl stated that they are working on a project that will save researchers to publish their scientific studies at high costs and said “We want to make a first and open access to scientific studies so that can be share to everyone”
A panel entitled ”Open Science” was held at Yeditepe University Faculty of Fine Arts Conference Hall within the framework of “22-26 October Open Science Week”. The panel brought together many academics serving the world of science. Under the moderation of Yeditepe University Rector Prof. Dr. Canan Aykut Bingöl, Yeditepe University Hospital Medical Coordinator Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Keleştemur made a presentation on Open Science, Yeditepe University Vice President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Aydin on Open Science / The Current Situation in Europe and Turkey, and the Faculty of Medicine Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Bayram Yilmaz on Open Access Publishing.
"WE WILL MAKE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES SHAREABLE"
Prof Dr. Canan Aykut Bingöl, after the panel evaluation, stated that they intend to disseminate scientific studies to the whole world through open science and said “When we talk about open science, we mean the dissemination of scientific studies in the fields of health and social sciences. This covers the accessibility for the social community that is not within the scientific world. However, the cost of open access is now on those who conduct those studies. As Yeditepe University, we would like to take the first step to create open access within the university and become able to share our scientific studies directly with our society and the whole world. In this regard, our work will be very efficient both on behalf of our country and on behalf of our faculty members. In Turkey, there are currently many open-access journals. But this will be a first as a structure that involves many sciences as a university.”
STUDIES WILL BE REVIEWED BY A BOARD
Prof. Dr. Bingöl said that the research to be conducted within the university will be evaluated by a Scientific Board, and added “we think that the scientific board should be formed not only by faculty members at our university but also by expert people in their subjects. In this way, we think we will make the publications more qualified. Our biggest problem here is that we are paying serious money to reach these publications. Similarly, in order to have a publication in open access journals, a fee of 2 to 3 thousand dollars is paid. These are really high figures. With open access, I hope everyone will have direct access to scientific publications.”
"INFORMATION POLLUTION CAN ALSO OCCUR"
Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Keleştemur pointed out that information pollution might occur when knowledge is easily accessed and the following should be considered:
“In addition to the right information, false information can be spread to the public. Over time, these drawbacks will disappear. The publication of information in universal dimensions is very important. Everyone's access to the right information is important for the future of society. Here, right and wrong information needs to be extracted. Openly accessible scientific publications must be passed through the filter of strict referees. When accepting manuscripts, they should be very careful in that process and prevent the publication of wrong information. For a while, we will see the drawbacks. Publishing houses play a major role in helping the right information to reach the community.”
"A MINIMUM COST SHOULD BE ASKED OF RESEACRHERS"
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Aydın emphasized that the costs of the journals in open science were met with the fees received from publishers. Underlining the need for a financial source for journals, Prof. Dr. Aydın said: “Open access journals are trying to cover the costs of journals and publishing from the fees they receive from the authors. For this reason, open access is one of the important applications in the world because the goals is to for all the people and even the required stakeholders to access this information. It is important to reach this information in the most transparent, sustainable and cost-effective way. Researchers may not have the chance to publish when they face publishing costs. Therefore, it will be a more sustainable process if open access allows researchers to have a publication at a minimum cost”.
