Biopharmaceutical Sector to Grow at Yeditepe University with GE Fast Trak Technology
Yeditepe University and GE Healthcare have started a collaboration that will advance the biopharmaceutical sector in Turkey. The GE Fast Trak technology and training center will support the training of local talents in the field of bioprocesses at Yeditepe University.
Yeditepe University and GE Healthcare Life Sciences have started a collaboration to accelerate bioprocesses projects in the development of innovative drugs and improve productivity in Turkey and the surrounding region in the development of. Within this scope, GE’s Fast Trak Technology and Training Laboratory was established at the university. Laboratory activities beginning in May will encourage the cooperation between the new fast-growing biopharmaceutical industry and the academia in Turkey.
Before Yeditepe University, the Healthcare Life Sciences Fast Trak Technology and Education Laboratory had opened at the GE Turkey Innovation Center in March 2016. To date, the Center hosted about 450 scientists and scientific activities for biopharmaceutical sector representatives and Fast Trak training programs.
GE's Fast Trak Technology and Training Laboratory, installed at Yeditepe University, has the most advanced laboratory-scale technologies, bioreactors, chromatographic systems and protein research technologies for upstream and downstream bioprocess stages. These technologies will be used by local GE bioprocess specialists who will provide hands-on technology training and process development services for customers in the region. The scientists at Yeditepe University will also study here and access the advanced technologies needed to carry out their projects.
Regarding the collaboration, Yeditepe University Rector Prof. Dr. Canan Aykut Bingol said: "The biopharmaceutical industry in Turkey has a strong growth potential and this academia-industry collaboration will provide an important contribution to the increase of R & D activities in the sector. In addition, it will also help bring the country to a richer and more compatible biological drug establishment. Through this collaboration, we will improve the bioprocessing competence and capabilities of our researchers by providing them with access to high-quality bioprocessing technologies and expertise.
Pointing out that the biological pharmaceutical industry has grown approximately 15 percent in Turkey for the last five years, GE Healthcare Life Sciences Fast Trak CEO Umay Şaplakoğlu said the following about the collaboration: "In the past five years, the government aimed at boosting incentives related to biopharmaceutical research and R & D activities. The most important reason for us to be investing in a Fast Trak center in Istanbul is to have the necessary competence and infrastructure for this positive step. We need to increase our interaction with current and future capabilities to consolidate R & D and production support for the biological drug field. For this reason, we will continue to serve our sectoral customers by strengthening our relations with the academy and placing our Fast Trak center at Yeditepe University. "
