Stating that the most imporant quality that enables intelligence to be more effective is quality education, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun stated that stress may hamper the development of intelligence.
Intelligence is an abstract and complicated concept of which definition keeps expanding, aside from having multiple definitions already. So, what does IQ test mean? Can Intelligence be developed? How could it be used more effectively? What are the factors that adversely affect the development of intelligence?
“Intelligence is a Multidimensional Concept”
Stating that intelligence is a multidimensional concept and has genetical, environmental, and socio-cultural aspects, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education at Yeditepe University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun stated the following: “Intelligence, in the field of educational sciences, for the last 40-50 years, is defined as being able to reason, adapt, as the ability of judgement, understanding the problem, evaluation and producing possible solutions towards the problem”.
“It is Important Which Performance Indicators are Used in Testing”
Coşkun provided the following example: “An athlete being able to run fast is a performance of intelligence since it requires the athlete to use both cognitive and physical capabilities at the same time and correctly. Yet, if I do not hold a running contest, but a mathematics exam and the athlete fails, it is not an indicator of that person being unintelligent, but there is a deficit in that performance indicator”.
How can We Use Intelligence More Effectively?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun pointed out that the most fundamental attribute that enables the intelligence to be more effective is quality education. She also pointed out that there is a direct correlation between intelligence and education, intelligent people can be more successful in education, and educated people can develop their intelligence further.
Coşkun also pointed out the importance of the use of language, the fundamental skill that feeds all cognitive skills in the development of intelligence. She explained that the acquisition of reading and effective listening skills positively supports the language skills, n turn the cognitive performance.
“Stress Adversely Affects the Development of Intelligence”
Pointing out that stress is the primary factor in the list of factors that parents and teachers have to be careful about in developing intelligence, Coşkun stated that a certain level of anxiety may have an impact in realizing the goals, yet too much stress adversely effects the development of intelligence. Coşkun also stated: “As stress levels increase, the person starts having difficulties in performance of such cognitive skills, showing signs of distraction and the speed of comprehension is also reduced”.
