With the impact of globalization and digitalization, the logistics sector is experiencing significant growth. Prof. Dr. Erkut Akkartal highlighted that logistics commands approximately 8-10% of global income, emphasizing the increasing demand for specialized professionals in this field. Prof. Dr. Erkut Akkartal, Head of the Logistics Management Department at Yeditepe University, evaluated the developments in the logistics sector and the employment needs in this area.
"Digitalization and Automation Investments Increased"
"The pandemic process tested the flexibility and adaptability of the logistics sector," Akkartal noted, adding: "Logistics management encompasses not only the transportation of goods and services but also warehousing, inventory management, and customer services. Disruptions in supply chains have underscored the importance of crisis management and rapid problem-solving skills among logistics management graduates. During this period, investments in digitalization and automation systems in the logistics sector have accelerated."
"The Backbone of the Global Economy"
Prof. Dr. Erkut Akkartal stated that logistics and supply chain management form the backbone of the global economy, adding, "Logistics management is crucial for ensuring the continuity of global supply chains. The integration of digital technologies enables more efficient management of logistics processes. The use of big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and automation systems plays a critical role in optimizing logistics operations. Therefore, the developments in trade and logistics increase the demand for knowledgeable logistics professionals."
"Until Teleportation is Invented, Logistics..."
"Logistics commands approximately 8-10% of global income," said Erkut Akkartal, noting, "One of the fundamental points on which e-commerce relies is logistics. Because, except for logistics, e-commerce conducts everything via the Internet. In other words, until teleportation technology is invented, logistics will guide everything, especially e-commerce, and continue to be the most important element."
Broad Career Opportunities
Prof. Dr. Akkartal pointed out that logistics management graduates have broad career opportunities in various sectors such as e-commerce, manufacturing, distribution, and retail, continuing: "Universities and educational institutions are training qualified professionals in logistics management through their educational programs and certifications. Employers collaborate with universities and educational institutions to find qualified logistics professionals. Moreover, Logistics Management is a field where graduates can most easily start their own businesses."
Sustainable Logistics
Prof. Dr. Erkut Akkartal highlighted that transportation accounts for 89% and warehousing for 11% of greenhouse gas emissions in the logistics sector, adding: "The logistics sector, which contributes to every industry, is also taking initiatives to reduce carbon emissions. By integrating all systems and approaches applied in sustainable logistics with advanced technology, innovation, and digitalization, many advantages can be achieved on a sectoral basis. Regarding reducing carbon emissions in the logistics sector, the European Union's 'Green Deal,' one of Türkiye's leading foreign trade partners, stands out. The logistics sector is expected to undergo many transformations in adapting to the Green Deal."
