Golden Advice from the Dean to Students: Effective Study in 10 Steps

-

For students who struggle with studying, can't focus, or are constantly distracted—these tips are for you! Yeditepe University Faculty of Education Dean Prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun, shares ten practical strategies to boost students' motivation for studying.

While some students naturally enjoy studying, sitting at their desks, and immersing themselves in books, others often find it challenging to stay motivated. The latter group tends to be much larger, especially in today’s world, where digital distractions like video games and social media, have become integral parts of life. However, there are effective strategies to make studying easier and more engaging. Prof. Dr. Yelkin Diker Coşkun outlines ten essential steps for increasing study motivation:

1. Set Clear Goals: The first step in motivation is to define a personal goal. There should be a reason behind your efforts—whether it's passing a class, passing an exam, building a career, or gaining self-confidence. The key here is pursuing goals that are personally meaningful, as externally imposed goals may not be motivating or fulfilling.
2. Don’t Wait for Inspiration: Motivation doesn't always come naturally. Obligations, whether academic or recreational, rarely inspire oneself. Taking control by creating a study plan helps build momentum and keeps you accountable.
3. Create a Study Plan: Prepare your study environment to succeed. Organize your desk and room and minimize distractions like social media, games, or messaging at least 10-15 minutes before you start studying. This mental preparation will help you focus better.
4. Put in the Effort: Motivation requires effort. If you struggle to understand a topic, avoid giving up. Seek help from a teacher or classmate. Persistent effort often leads to positive outcomes.
5. Manage Anxiety Effectively: Managing anxiety positively influences motivation. Research has revealed that both excessive anxiety and lack of stress can hinder success. However, moderate stress can be helpful. If you are feeling anxious about a subject, list your concerns in writing, along with possible solutions. If self-assessment is difficult, seek guidance from a teacher or mentor to create a structured study plan.
6. Use Engaging Materials: Curiosity, interest, and motivation are closely linked. To make studying more engaging, use materials such as textbooks, workbooks, or visual aids that capture your interest.
7. Avoid Procrastination: Constantly studying or endlessly procrastinating both harm motivation. Instead, aim for a balanced study routine where time is allocated for learning, recreation, and personal growth. A well-balanced schedule contributes to inner peace and long-term success.
8. Take Notes by Hand: The widespread use of digital tools has reduced our habit of writing by hand, which can affect retention and focus. Taking handwritten notes, creating sketches, or mind maps can help structure your thoughts better. Reviewing these notes at the beginning and end of a study session strengthens learning.
9. Rest and Recharge: Physical fatigue can affect mental focus. Ensure you get enough rest, eat healthily, stay active, and maintain a regular sleep schedule. Quality sleep alone can significantly boost academic performance.
10. Believe in Yourself: Self-belief is essential for sustaining motivation. Trusting in your abilities, thinking positively about yourself, and striving to meet your goals are crucial. If you find it difficult to stay motivated, it may be helpful to seek support from family members or school counselors.
