A Global Call in the Name of the Surgeon of the Century: Young Surgeons to Compete in Istanbul

Modern neurosurgery was transformed by Prof. Dr. M. Gazi Yaşargil, widely regarded as the Surgeon of the Century, and his name continues to inspire a new generation of scientists. Yeditepe University has opened applications for the fifth edition of the M. Gazi Yaşargil Young Neurosurgeon Award, established to carry forward his legacy.

Yaşargil's contributions to microneurosurgery mark a turning point in the field. Through the microsurgical techniques he developed and his role in popularizing the surgical microscope, he left a permanent imprint on the history of medicine. The methods he pioneered in cerebrovascular disease and tumor surgery are now accepted as standard practice worldwide. Over the course of his career, Yaşargil touched the lives of thousands of patients and shaped the future of the discipline through the surgeons he trained.

The award program, organized by the Department of Neurosurgery at Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine, aims to bring young neurosurgeons from around the world together in Istanbul.

Scientific work in microneurosurgery and microsurgical anatomy will be evaluated by an independent international scientific committee.

The winner will be announced on June 20, 2026, during the 14th Istanbul Yaşargil Microneurosurgery Course.

Applicants must be 40 years of age or younger, hold a position as a neurosurgeon or neurosurgery resident, be the first author of the submitted paper, and have conducted their research in microneurosurgery or microsurgical anatomy. The paper must have been published in an SCI-indexed journal in 2025. Articles published online ahead of print are not eligible.

Required application materials include a curriculum vitae, one letter of recommendation, and a PDF copy of the published article. The application deadline is May 1, 2026.
