How Efficient and Correctly Are We Using Social Media?

Psychologist Prof. Dr. Servet Bayram gave tips on using social media correctly and efficiently.

4.4 billion of the 7.7 billion population today, routinely use Internet-based technologies in their daily lives. Sharing content via computers or smartphones over the internet, especially via social media, is now seen as an ordinary activity. However, it is also important to use social media effectively and correctly.

Prof. Dr. Servet Bayram, the head of Yeditepe University Department of Computer and Instructional Technology Education as well as the Coordinator of Information Technologies and Social Media Education Graduate Program said, "57 million people of our 82 million population (70%) in our country use the internet. The vast majority of this number is composed of young people in the education age."

A Large Information Pool

Prof. Dr. Servet Bayram pointed out that there are numerous studies pointing to the negative effects of social media but added that accessing thousands of materials through virtual library and information pool applications and sharing information and documents on a global scale without time-space constraint makes the internet very important.

Psychologist Prof. Dr. Bayram says that instead of rejecting social media, we should use it correctly and effectively and gave the following suggestions:

 Be careful when sharing private posts, especially posts that may pose privacy concerns.

 Sharing posts about children decipher the life of children and leave "footprints". This footprint can be used by malicious people in the future. No data about children should be shared.

 Reposts may cause you to be involved in a crime. Attention should be paid to the persons being followed and the reposts made.

 In social media, people show themselves differently than they really are, showing a "non-existent life" style. Posts should be as close to reality as possible.

 Likes and shares should not be done in haste, the information may be wrong. The information should be verified from as many channels as possible and then shared.

 As stated in the European Parliament's 2010 report which includes research from hundreds of scholars, the maximum length of time spent on social media should be as follows:

• Age 0-6: Should not use it all.

• Age 6-12: Half an hour per day under parental control.

• Age 12-18: 1.5 hours a day under parental control.

• Adults: Should not use it more than 2 hours a day.

 The role of Information Technology and Social Media Education is very important. In this context:

• Specialists who have completed field training should be consulted and assisted,

• Academic education in this area should be disseminated as national policy,

• Trainings should be put into the Ministry of National Education curriculum in this regard,

• Lessons related to the subject in primary and secondary education should not be evaded

• Social media courses such as STEM, Robotics and Coding courses should also be included in programs.
