Yeditepe University Faculty of Fine Arts aims to educate socially sensitive artists and designers who are aware of the constructive effectiveness of art and design, are creative and can offer original solutions; are able to develop critical thinking skills, adopt their own culture; become international by following the trends in contemporary art and design and are able to think interdisciplinary. Our faculty offers a contemporary education to its students with its experienced teaching staff of internationally renowned artists, designers and researchers. Technological facilities that enable academic studies, workshops, studios, laboratories, double major and minor programs that promote interdisciplinary education and Erasmus agreements differentiate our department. Founded in 1996, Yeditepe University Faculty of Fine Arts has trained many successful young artists and designers with the awareness of the cultural importance and effectiveness of art and design and continues to do so. Prof. Gülveli KAYA Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts The concepts of art and artist have been questioned in every period and tried to be explained according to the era and geography in which they are located. When we look at the common points of both concepts, we see that their focus is human. According to some interpretations, art itself is at the centre, and according to some interpretations, society is at the centre, but when we take the human out of it, it is not possible for art to express anything on its own. In fact, this situation is valid for all areas created by human beings outside the existing nature. Art has a privileged place among them as a common and social value of humanity. I believe that this privilege is hidden in the artist’s relationship with art and with himself as a human being. So, what does “the artist as a human being” mean? Here, if we reduce the human being to the individual, that is to say, to the “I” where the person will realise or question himself/herself, it will be possible to establish a connection between the “I” and the artist and his/her art through the question “Who am I?”. When searching for an answer to the question “Who am I?” we have always counted the contents of consciousness; I am a teacher, a mother, a doctor, a child, an artist, a painter and so on. However, the answer to the question ‘who am I?’ lies there: “I am the consciousness that asks, realises and observes all these questions”. Among all these, I would like to emphasise how the “I” disappears in social roles. At this point, I think that before the artist gives an answer to the question “Who am I?” within the phenomenon of art, he/ she should search for himself/herself in the answers to these questions. These answers will bring the artist closer to the “human being”, interpret life and himself/herself through the human being with his/ her own unique existence and pave the way for producing more original and creative works. If we identify the artist with the work of art, which is the practice of production, in the light of these explanations, the artist has to be both conscious of himself and conscious of his production. In other words, he/she has to be human twice. We see that artificial intelligence technologies have accelerated and applications such as ChatGPT have started to take place in daily life. Classical education methods for storing information and measurement and evaluation methods based on these methods may not make any sense in the near future. In the light of these developments, the vision of our faculty of fine arts is to educate “individuals” who are aware of themselves, not those who store information. The person with this awareness will not know how to use the loaded information, but to find a new way in the face of the problem. 285
