Prof. Dr. Baki Serdar ÖZTEZCAN Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences The health sector continues to be one of the best one with employment opportunities, also even when the economies of countries are in turmoil, it is the most consistent industry in terms of employment. I think that, due to the increase in welfare levels, the importance given to health by individuals and societies will increase and job opportunities will expand due to the increase in average life expectancy and this constitutes a wide variety of jobs within the industry. Also, healthcare professionals who can speak at least one foreign language are highly-sought since the healthcare tourism is increasing in our country. Those who want to be in close contact with people, care for their health in some way, relieve their pain, restore their lost functions, or provide a healthier life should prefer these departments. The students who know that they will get tired during the day, but find peace for helping people on their way home at that night not a month or year later should prefer these departments. In parallel with the prolongation of the average human life and the rapidly increasing knowledge, the workload of the existing occupations in the health sector increases and new job and occupation areas emerge. As a natural consequence of the indispensability and increasingly complexity of health services, the importance of all health professions will increase and diversification will continue in years. Based on these facts, Faculty of Health Sciences aims to train qualified health labor force equipped with universal knowledge and skills in important fields needed by the health sector in our country and in the world. The language of instruction in our departments of Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and Nursing, each of which is a 4-year undergraduate programme, is English. While preparing the education programmes, we take care that they are compatible with the health sector and epidemiological realities of our country on the one hand and meet the principles stipulated by international accreditation institutions on the other. In addition, the Departments of Nutrition and Dietetics and Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation of our faculty are accredited by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Health Sciences Education Programmes (SABAK) and the Department of Nursing is accredited by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Nursing Education Programmes (HEPDAK). We offer graduate programs in all three departments for students who wish to further their postgraduate education or aim to pursue an academic career. Our students can start their business life one step ahead by doing double major and minor degrees both in different departments of our faculty and in other departments related to their own professions. For me, the most important feature that distinguishes Yeditepe University Nursing Department from other universities is that the language of instruction is English. In this way, I can communicate better with nurses and nursing organizations abroad and improve myself more. During my education, I was entitled to attend the Alexander TEI of Thessaloniki University in Greece under the Erasmus program. In this way, I completed both my courses and internships in the hospitals there and gained different experiences by closely monitoring the health system of a different country. Throughout our undergraduate education, learning becomes easier thanks to the laboratory applications and project assignments carried out in relation to the teaching objectives of each course. The current laboratory conditions also contribute to the acquisition of the necessary skills. The internships we carry out in various fields both at Yeditepe University Hospital and state hospitals provide the opportunity to get to know the wide working area of the nursing profession, to realise the responsibilities required by the profession and to have an idea about the path we will draw. Thanks to our department, whose language of instruction is English and whose quality is proven by being accredited by HEPDAK, we complete our undergraduate education as graduates who will contribute to the scientific knowledge of the nursing profession. After my graduation, I realized that what Yeditepe University gave me is more than a diploma. The international success of my university allowed me to spend one semester of my studies in Germany within the scope of Erasmus + Student Exchange Program. In this process, I had the opportunity to develop my foreign language as well as to experience to see the functioning of my profession in Europe. Again, I benefited from the scholarship offered to the students who completed the undergraduate program of the university with a degree and started to a Master’s program in the department of Nutrition and Dietetics. It was very advantageous for me to choose Yeditepe University with the national accreditation of the curriculum and the education we receive, the importance given to English education, the laboratory and internship opportunities in many hospitals. In addition to the education, I received in my department, it allowed me to improve myself in more than one field by doing a minor with the Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts. The fact that the academicians in the department convey very well to us how to apply an approach in every situation we will encounter in our professional life will allow us to use our knowledge easily when we graduate.
