Season Premiere by the Academics

The works of the members of the Graphic Design and Plastic Arts and Painting Departments of Yeditepe University will be with the art enthusiasts in “GRA/PLAST II” exhibition on 4 November, Friday, at Kadıköy Municipality’s Caddebostan Cultural Center Art Gallery. Organized in the memory of Prof. Dr. Kaya Özsezgin, who curated the first GRA/PLAST exhibition and passed on 17 August 2016, by the faculty, the exhibition will open its doors at 18.00.

“ACADEMY’S CONTRIBUTION IS NOT ONLY RAISING STUDENTS”
Providing information regarding the exhibition, Yeditepe University’s Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Head of the Department of Plastic Arts and Painting, Prof. Gülveli Kaya reminded that the faculty and the university celebrated its 25 th year last year, and raised thousands of graduates, contributing to the fields of plastic arts and design. Kaya continued as follows: “Yet, the contributions that an academic institution can provide for the community, to the art in general, to humanity, or any part of life that it can touch, cannot be limited to raising students. Another important contribution is the academic staff it raises. We are thankful to our Founder and Honorary President Bedrettin Dalan, who stood by us with his love for art and his far-sightedness in the development of our staff and programs, as well as our Rector Prof. Dr. Canan Aykut Bingöl, and all our past rectors”. Pointing out that he was a research assistant in the department during the first exhibition, curated by Prof. Dr. Kaya Özsezgin, Prof. Gülveli Kaya continued as follows: “Today, as the Dean of the faculty and the Head of the Department of Plastic Arts and Painting, we have decided to open the second exhibition with the same name, same location, and same design identity, in order to continue our institutional memory, to present an example to our newly recruited academics, to carry them into the future and, most importantly, in honor of Prof. Dr. Özsezgin and our other former academics who have passed”.

MEETING POINT OF TWO DISCIPLINES
Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Head of the Department of Graphic Design, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem Mutaf Büyükarman also stated that GRA/PLAST II is a witness to the frequently crossing paths of art and design. Stating that plastic arts is the foundation to all disciplines of fine arts, Büyükarman stated the following: “The approximation of sub-sections of graphic design, specifically those that are close to arts, such as illustration, unique printing and photography, to the discipline of plastic arts can be observed today, just like in the past. Also, conceptual works that are created with social awareness by designers who know the effectiveness of the graphic design in the creation of a visual culture and its power of communication are presented to us as works of contemporary art. Despite all the changes, graphic design preserved its connection with art regardless. In terms of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Yeditepe University, these two disciplines, of which productions are mostly close and sometimes intertwined, have met in this exhibition”.
